- Jack Devine is still the leading MVP candidate: Accounting for 6 total TDs Devine scored on RSA’s first play of the season. He made the right plays at the right moments and showed great touch and accuracy.
- The LB corps is elite: Angelo had a sack in this game, but the other two LBs, Robb and new starter Oliver Cooper, were all over the BCS offense and were forcing fumbles while being physical.
- The Run D and D as a whole was lacking: It was the first game of the season, and the Eagles offense was good, but Cooper Murr and the other BCS RBs were running all over the Knights, but they allowed no TDs on the ground. It was just something I noticed.
- The HBack Braylen Compton was a guy I liked: New HBack Braylen Compton played hard, was physical, and executed his blocks well while also contributing in the short passing game. He was an effort player that I noticed and liked
- Kellan Millington will be a top D2 WR: Millington had 157 yards and 2 TDs. He looks to be Devine’s top weapon this year.
- Ben Anderson was a good ATH: Anderson had 2 TDs out of the backfield receiving and was very useful in the red zone. Lookout for him as a red-zone weapon.
- A quick shoutout to my cousin, Chris O’Reilly: A coach at Regents, my cousin Chris was a family member I hadn’t seen in a long time, and it was great to catch up with him. He seemed to be beloved by the RSA players. He also said some good things about our team and players, which was nice considering how long he has been at Regents and how many great teams he has played against.
Brazos Takeaways
- Ball security was a huge problem: 7 total fumbles from the Eagles last night, 4 of them ost, some on special teams, some on offense. The offense played well enough that, without the fumbles, the game would have been very competitive.
- Special teams woes: The Eagles returners dropped RSA kickoffs at least 4 times and nearly muffed a punt. 2 of the 7 fumbles were also on KRs deep in Eagles territory that set up easy RSA TDs.
- Penalties were cleaned up: A big problem for the Eagles last week was 8 first-half penalties. The penalties were cut down sharply, and the OL (who had most of them) looked far more disciplined. Speaking of…
- The OL looked awesome: The Eagles allowed only 2 sacks, both on blitzes, vs a scary Regents front. They cleaned up penalties and helped the BCS offense rack up 153 on the ground. The OL is led by the senior trio of Ty Urban, Jess Conlee, and Darius Brumskill; they also have sophomore Grant “TBoone” Pickens and junior Zeke Dorman.
- The offense was moving the ball: Cooper Murr was hitting his WRs and running circles around the RSA defense on the ground; accounting for 227 total yards. If it weren’t for turnovers and a called-back TD, this would have been an incredibly competitive game.
- The defense is very physical: On the second play from the RSA offense, Hunter Black hunts down Jack Devine on the QB keeper and knocks his helmet off. The defense knocked off one other helmet later in the game. They played incredibly physically, and I could feel the hits from the press box. As long as they get time to rest between drives, they should be a strength.
- Kade Byrd has all-state potential at WR: Byrd has been the leading WR for 2 weeks and has been head-topping guys left, right, and center. He has over 100 yards and 2 TDs in 2 games. Be on the lookout for him.
