A wise man once said, “The times are a-changing”
Indeed they are. Massive news broke out of Houston this afternoon, as Austin Regents athletic director, and former state champion head coach, Beck Brydon has been named the new head man at Second Baptist.
This news is some of the biggest to rock the private school landscape in recent memory. Over 20 years of coaching, Brydon’s teams amassed 15 district championships, 11 TAPPS state title appearances, and 5 championships. He essentially built Regents into the premier culture in the southern division.
To further explain how key a figure Brydon is, we put him on our “Mount Rushmore” of all-time private school coaches in one of our first episodes ever (1:00:45 mark).
This make DII much more interesting. We have seen the north loading up on talent, as All Saints and Liberty have wasted no time stockpiling talent this offseason. But now the south has some skin in the game.
So what does this mean ultimately? That SBS is not content to kick back and let FBCA and Regents take control of the south. The Eagles return key athletes such as QB Murdock, ATH Crisp, DB Powers, DB Toon, RB Butler, OL Lee (6’8 342), and WR Toon, and now add one of the most decorated coaches in the history of the division.
Next season is going to be a war. Undoubtedly, FBCA will have some high-profile additions to complement P5 talents Warren and Granville. Regents will be state contenders with Murphy and Wilburn, and will now have some added motivation to best SBS should they meet in the postseason.
Now we wait and see what additional moves are made before the fall arrives. Houston has a plethora of talented athletes, and it will be intriguing to see how much of that talent coach Brydon can attract to SBS. However, I am more focused on what the new culture will look like. SBS already has established a winning tradition, securing 8 of the last 9 district championships. But when you think of “culture” in the south, you think of Regents, and the architect of that culture now resides with SBS. I am going to keep a close eye on the structure of the Eagles program in the lead-up to the season, keeping watch for any changes. Have no doubt, Beck Brydon will leave his mark on how this program is run.
The “offseason” has really been anything but so far this year. So many things are happening that it’s hard to keep up, but that’s what makes this fun. We are tracking all situations as they develop, and are active with updates here, as well as on twitter instagram and youtube.
